Leading local, national and international dignitaries have sent their good wishes to Lahore, Pakistan for the opening of the Dr Parvez Hassan Environmental Law Centre at the Punjab University Law College. The University Law College is the oldest and largest institution of legal education in Pakistan. It is also the first institution in the country and in the region to start a diploma program in Environmental Law (2001). Environmental law was also recently introduced in the regular Bachelor of Laws program, and will soon be offered as one of the subjects in the Master of Laws and the doctoral programs. The Centre will house the Environmental Law courses and other academic activities of the College and the University. The courses are being taught by a highly qualified faculty that includes three alumni from the Singapore capacity building courses (see related story below). Dr Parvez Hassan, an outstanding alumnus of the University and former Chair of the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law (1990 to 1996) and former Legal Adviser of the IUCN (1994 to 1996), donated the building in an act of generosity reflecting his outstanding lifelong commitment to environmental law.
